In this protest the marches were fighting for fair treatment, and pay for all people. One of the most famous details about this protest was that Birmingham’s police chief was extremely racist. The police chief’s name was Eugene “Bull” Connor.
Bull Connors tactics always involved assaulting the protesters with high-powered firemen hoses and letting vicious dogs loose to attack protesters. On May 2 1963 over a thousand students sang songs of freedom all over Birmingham, but were assaulted by police dogs, and high-powered fire truck hoses.
Letter from a Birmingham Jail
During this march Martin Luther King was arrested and had to sit in a Birmingham Jail Cell for a week but during that time he managed to write a small pamphlet which was read by over one million people. Throughout the Birmingham March Martin Luther King Jr. was able to influence black youth with the power of non-violence.
